The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has announced an investment of up to $100 million in TPG's Global South-Focused Climate Solutions Strategy. The commitment splits into $50 million for the TPG Rise Climate Global South Initiative fund and up to $50 million reserved for co-investments, ESG Today reported on October 20.
The strategy's target list runs across energy transition, green mobility, sustainable fuels, sustainable materials and products, carbon solutions, and adaptation and resilience. TPG frames the vehicle as a way to pull long-term private capital into high-impact climate opportunities in emerging and developing economies. TPG classifies the GSI fund as Article 9 under the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, the category for products with sustainable investment as their objective.
The Global South initiative was first presented in December 2023 at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, with a $2.5 billion capital-raising target. By September 2024 TPG had announced $1.25 billion in initial commitments, including ALTÉRRA's $500 million commitment, alongside capital from TPG Rise Climate II and institutional investors in Asia and North America.
AIIB's $50 million fund commitment equals 4% of the $1.25 billion of initial commitments TPG disclosed in September 2024. The full $100 million, if drawn, would be 4% of the strategy's stated $2.5 billion target.
Kim-See Lim, AIIB's chief investment officer for public sector (Region 1) and financial institutions and funds (global) clients, tied the allocation to the bank's own lending mix: "Through this partnership with TPG, AIIB is supporting the expansion of innovative climate solutions in emerging markets, while strengthening climate finance ecosystems across our members, in line with our corporate target to direct 50% of annual financing to private-sector-oriented operations by 2030."
